objective

The brief was to identify an issue that the public suffers from and design a strategy through an app that solves that problem. The concept needed to be branded, and well thought out in respect to a business plan as well as well backed by primary and secondary research.

solution

Most online streaming services lack organization and the ability to offer an efficient search engine which results in unnecessary time spent deciding what to watch. Sifter solved this consistent issue of our target audience by offering filters such as mood, genre, duration and year to quickly narrow down the search results and save them in the database so that the information could be used in the future to provide customized recommendations for our users.

app features

Sifter is a movie aggregator that cuts a user’s time in half when they are looking for the perfect movie. It uses research-based features to aid a user in finding what they’re looking for, which means more revenue for numerous streaming services, and happier customers.

PROCESS

research: data

As we collectively discussed the purpose of this app, we researched to find out the statistics on how many people actually struggle to decide what to watch. We surveyed 40 individuals and found out that majority of the people watched a movie or a show once a week, on streaming networks like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. We found most of our sample group spends 15 mins searching for a movie. We found that 90%, 73% and 72.5% knew the genre they wanted, picked according to reviews and ratings played a major role in their choice, respectively.

research: personas

We came up with personas of our potential users and how their daily life journey went before the use of our app versus after the use of our app. We aimed to make this journey as flawless and more effective as possible.

research: journey map

We made journey maps for all three of our personas to display how their usual process of picking and watching a movie is. This then helped us identify the pain points where our app could potentially improve their experience.

research: structure

Following the journey maps, we designed a structure of how the app will be navigated as. This helped us segregate all

our different functions and line them up in a way that was easiest to maneuver.

Then, using our structure we sketched out our very first wireframes with all our functions listed on them.

To test, we drew these on small sheets of paper and had users pick and choose functions to reveal the next screen. This helped us

understand how the user's eyes moved along the screen and where the most important components of the app should be located.

To clean up, we digitized our sketches and made a working prototype which then was key for our user testing.

app style guide

Lastly, we designed a brand image for our app. We kept in mind the existing designs in the market and made a color scheme and brand attributes that made Sifter look the most attractive.
